Fireside Chat with Chris Howse and Captain Lee Fook Choon – Insights into Shipping Arbitration and Mediation

The Committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (East Asia Branch) Young Members’ Group, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group, is excited to cordially invite you to a fireside chat with two distinguished Hong Kong shipping arbitrators and mediators, Chris Howse and Captain Lee Fook Choon.

In this session, they will share their career journeys, how they became shipping arbitrators and mediators, what their work entails, practical tips for aspiring professionals, and insights into current trends and developments in maritime dispute resolution.

This topic is applicable to all members and practitioners who are interested in arbitration / mediation. For those who practise or wish to learn more about shipping, don't miss the chance!

Speakers Biography:

Chris Howse

Chris was admitted as a solicitor in London in 1978 and in Hong Kong in 1981. He has over 45 years experience in charterparty, bill of lading and other maritime disputes.  He also has considerable experience in sale of goods, commodity and international trade disputes.  He is a qualified mediator.  He has been undertaking maritime arbitration on behalf of clients for over 45 years and acting as an arbitrator for over 30 years. 

He is a founding member of HKMAG, a member of HKIArb, a panel arbitrator with HKIAC, CMAC, CIETAC, SIAC and most other Asian jurisdictions.  He is a supporting member of LMAA.

Captain Lee Fook Choon

Captain Lee is a Master Mariner, Chartered Arbitrator, Chartered Insurance Practitioner, a marine loss adjuster and insurance recovery consultant since 1978 and maritime arbitrator since 1994. To date, he has been involved in more than 160 arbitration cases in Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Shanghai involving a wide spectrum of shipping and trade related disputes. He is a founding full member of HKMAG and Chair of Maritime Silk Road Chamber of International Arbitration Commission, China. He is a listed panel arbitrator with HKIAC, SIAC, SCMA,, ICC, AIAC, CIETAC, BAC, India Arbitration Council amongst others.

He is also an approved tutor with the UK Chartered Institute of Arbitrators besides being a practising mediator in commercial and insurance disputes on ad-hoc and institutional basis. He is an accredited mediator with the Hong Kong Mediation Council and a principal mediator with Singapore Mediation Centre and Singapore International Mediation Centre. He is also an accredited adjudicator in Malaysia on construction matters.

Captain Lee is currently Consultant to Integral Marine Consultants, Singapore and Director of Toplis & Harding (Marine) Ltd, Hong Kong. He has written many papers and published two books namely “Risk Profile of Ships” and a sea adventure book under the title “Transforming Grace of God.”

As an insurance loss  adjuster, he has handled or supervised the handling of more than 9,000 marine hull, cargo and general insurance claims spanning over 4 decades.
